What makes a good Mobile Web Site great? It seems like there are so many bad Mobile Web Sites out there so I wanted to write about some criteria to spot a great Mobile Web site.

The most important element of a great Mobile Web site is that it has to be tailored to the characteristics of the mobile device and mobile web browser. Mobile devices differ from the average PC in several ways so the web sites need to be designed accordingly.
1. The mobile device CPU/RAM are limited so the web sites need to be light.
2. The network capactiy is limited as well so items downloaded from the web site like images need to be small (e.g. 20KB) and optimized.
3. Mobile device screen sizes vary greatly (from 120x120 to 480x800) so the web site needs to be either designed to display well on the smallest screens or it needs to be tailored to the different devices.
4. PCs have navigation devices such as mouse or touch pad that the mobile devices don't have. The best mobile devices make navigation through keys easy and reduce the number of clicks that get the user to where he needs to go.
5. Many mobile devices don't have a keyboard so writing text is extremely tedious. The best Mobile Web sites avoid text input fields and anticipate what the user wants to do through link navigation.
6. Color schemes and attractiveness. There are a lot of mobile web sites out there with bright neon color schemes. The best ones are ones that use attractive color schemes that don't distract from the site functionality.
7. One more word on site navigation. Phone devices let the web application assign button short cuts through the phone keyword 1-9 so the best web sites let the user chose list items using the phone keyword. Here's an example: http://m-dir.mobi
